Last month we recognized and saluted professional members of the American Institute of Architects. To continue with our new decade theme of recognizing and saluting professional Architecture, Engineering and Landscape Architecture membership organizations history, mission/objectives, values/vision we feature the National Society of Professional Engineers. The History: NSPE was established in 1934 to realize a simple but vital goal to create an inclusive, nontechnical organization dedicated to the interests of licensed professional engineers, regardless of practice area. An organization that would protect engineers (and the public) from unqualified practitioners, build public recognition for the profession, and stand against unethical practices and inadequate compensation.
Before the NSPE Constitution was adopted on September 3, 1934, delegates led with 10 objectives:
- Protect the economic and professional interests of the engineer, individually and collectively, through united effort, legislation, and public relations.
- To organize, coordinate, unite, and extend the activities of state societies of professional engineers and their country chapters.
- To strengthen, unify, extend and enforce state legislation protecting the public welfare, the practice of engineering, and the designation "Engineer."
- To protect the engineer against exploitation, unprofessional competition, unlawful encroachment, and restriction of rights of practice.
- To improve conditions for employment and methods of engaging engineering services.
- To wage a militant campaign for more adequate compensation for engineering services.
- To extend employment services and build up a reserve fund for assisting engineers in distress.
- To encourage and guide student engineers and engineering assistants.
- To promote cooperative and fraternal relations within the profession.
- To conduct a planned campaign for the advancement of the engineering profession in public recognition, confidence, and esteem.

As a Professional Engineer, I dedicate my professional knowledge and skill to the advancement and betterment of human welfare.
I pledge:
- To give the utmost of performance;

- To live and work according to the laws of man and the highest standards of professional conduct;
- To place service before profit, the honor and standing of the profession before personal advantage, and the public welfare above all other considerations.

On Friday, February 21st, as President of LS Credentialing Services I attended the 69th Annual National Engineers Week joint KSPE and MSPE Luncheon in Kansas City.
